To give you a little bit of backstory, I began my blog about 11 months ago. I have barely worked on it since then (I will address some of the reasons below). But since I recently picked back up my blogging experience, I decided to document all the mistakes that I was making that either affected my blog directly or affected my motivation.
Trying to do everything at once
It is impossible to design and build a blog, learn social media, get your analytics setup, try to make money right away and develop and write content at the same time!!!! I went crazy and got overwhelmed and gave up. Since I am also new to blogging I developed a calendar here. Other bloggers may disagree but this is working for me. This calendar is for the first month of blogging while spending about 15hrs/week. Obviously everyone is different and has different schedules. For me, this was the best effort while working full-time. So 5 hrs during the week after work and the rest of the time on the weekends.
Not investing in a good theme!
I have web development experience and still recommend this!! I think my theme was only $30 and it is worth every penny!
I will speak from my perspective knowing WordPress. I am not getting paid for this post so this is my honest opinion. WordPress has been very easy for me to set up my blog. I also hear great things about Squarespace.
Trying to make money too quick
Yes it is important to make it easy to make money but that should not be in your first 30 goals. You have to develop your brand/content/message first. And it is important to get your schedule worked out so you can be consistent and have easy work flow. Like I said, I am in the midst of doing this now.
Posting all the time
Some experts recommend posting between 1-3 times a week depending on your niche/type of blog. I personally am currently struggling with this. I am working full time and do not post 1/week. I hope once I get my site where I like it then I can knock out more and more posts every week. Since I have some web experience, I spent a ton of time fiddling with different themes and trying to tweak everything. So I probably should add another mistake being “I spend too much time on something I should abandon and move forward.” I will never get anywhere by spending 100 hours playing around with wordpress themes and settings. Although sometimes that can be just for fun 🙂
I just went down the black hole of successful bloggers. It is so easy to compare yourself to others and the progress they have made. Do not give in!! Today, you (and I) are right where we are meant to be. So make a plan, take a deep breath, pour a glass of wine (or coffee) and go for it!
Once you post, release it out into the world.
I felt (still feel) so conscious about my friends or family reading my posts, what if I sounded cheesy, what if I am a horrible writer, what if I fail? None of this matters, because your family will always love and support you (or at least they should) and your friends should support you no matter what and if they don’t maybe you should get some new friends.
I really hope this list helps you, I hope to expand as I keep progressing. Stay strong in your goals and let’s do this together!
